All those flags

On our first full day in Riga (11/11), we were surprised to see Latvian flags everywhere. At first we thought they were just very nationalistic, but we gradually realised it was some kind of public holiday.

Phyllis saw a woman in a car, and when watching the news in Latvian during the evening, she realised it had been the president on her way to some kind of parade.

And the next day, all the flags were gone, even from the trams.

Imponerende hvepsebo!

More about Transcaucasian products

Look at these pomegranates from Azerbaijan! They are huge, beautiful and delicious!

Why can’t we buy fruit like that here? Phyllis took this photo in Riga, and Riga has been part of the EU, and thus of the internal market, for a two and a half years, so if they can sell them there, surely they can be sold here as well!?!

The same applies to my previous blog posting about Georgian wine – why can’t we buy the good stuff that Latvian consumers are getting?

Georgian wine in Latvia

In Britain and Denmark, it’s almost impossible to get hold of Georgian wine. Compare this with the situation in any Latvian supermarket – see for instance the photo on the left (Gruzija is Latvian for ‘Georgia’).

What surprised me even more was that they also sold cheap Bulgarian copies of Georgian wines – see the photo on the right (you might need to click on it to see a larger version).

Needless to say, I brought several bottles back to Glasgow. Strangely enough, however, Phyllis doesn’t quite seem to share my love for kindzmarauli… We gave her parents a bottle, though, so it will be interesting to see their reactions!

Back from Riga

We came back from our weekend trip to Riga late last night. I have a long list of topics to blog, and so does Phyllis, but we both need to catch up on our sleep before we start blogging. ;-)

The photo is from Riga Airport, which is a nice place to crawl…

A dark Hefeweizen for me, please!

Léon has now progressed from his coffee-drinking stage.

This photo was taken during a visit to the West Brewing Company, a very nice micro-brewery and German restaurant at Glasgow Green. It’s a really nice place – the food is great (if you love German food), they have high chairs that match the rest of the furniture, and they have free Ikea toys for toddlers.

Temperature and blood pressure

Being off sick with a flu has given me a chance to ponder the various ways people in different countries deal with being ill. As all Danish people (possibly all continental Europeans), I check my temperature regularly when I’m ill (yesterday I reached 39.5°C [= 103.1°F]), but Phyllis claims that people in this country don’t bother – more often than not, they don’t even own a thermometer. As she says, what would I do differently if I didn’t know my temperature?

In Georgia, people don’t check their temperature either, but instead they check their blood pressure, and they thought it was weird that I didn’t know my normal blood pressure.

I believe I once heard that people in China do something different when they’re ill, but unfortunately, I’ve totally forgotten what it was. Does anybody know?

What’s this?
